Yesterday was Student Council Election Day at Ivy and Eli's school.
None of our other kids have ever had any interest in politics (which is shocking considering how often I express my delight over the actions of one elected official or another) but Eli decided a few weeks ago he wanted run for president. "It's your first election," I said, "are you sure you don't want to try vice-president or something, you know, to see if you like it?" Nope, he wanted to head straight for the top. So we began planning his first campaign.
The candidates weren't allowed to pass out stickers or buttons or cash. All they could do was write a speech and make one measly poster to hang in the cafeteria.
The night before he layed out the perfect outfit and practiced his speech about 20 times.
Then yesterday morning the kids gave their pitches to the student body via KHWK (the school's closed circuit TV station). I couldn't believe how brave they all were. There is no way I would have had the nerve to make a speech to the whole school when I was in the 5th grade. (I'd probably have a hard time doing it now!)
He did a great job.
He probably would have won if the "faculty advisers" hadn't made him cut all of my jokes from his speech.
Oh well, there's always next year.
